DVD REVIEW: CHIKARA TAG WORLD GRAN PRIX - NIGHT ONE

By Ed Shirreffs on 2/11/2007 11:11 AM

CHIKARA is holding a three night King of Trios tournament next weekend in Southeastern Pennsylvania. King of Trios replaces the Tag World Grand Prix, a tournament that saw thirty two tag teams from all over the world compete. Now is a good time to take a look back at last year's tournament, which was historic in that it saw the creation of the Campeonato de Parejas, the tag team championship the teams were competing for and the very first belts
produced for CHIKARA.

Night One of the tournament was held in Hellertown, Pennsylvania on February 24, 2006. The first thing that stands out about the latest CHIKARA DVDs is the artwork for the cover. TWGP06, Night One features a cool comic book theme. If I knew anything about comic books, I'd be able to tell you what it is an homage to, but I'm sure aficionados out there will instantly recognize it. The artwork on the individual discs is also very striking. If you are ever at a show with a Smartmark Video table, take a second to browse through the CHIKARA DVDs. You might be tempted to drop twenty dollars just to collect the covers.

The show kicks off with an Opening Ceremony. Leonard F. Chikarason and all the referees come out first. Out next are most of the sixteen teams competing in night one of the tournament. One by one, the teams come to the ring. It's a really cool visual, and shows you the respect that CHIKARA has for tradition and competition. It also gives the event a big time
atmosphere. The teams get in front and pose for a big group picture.

Crossbones & Rorschach vs. The Dark Breed (Hallowicked & ???)

Crossbones gives a promo saying he can beat any question mark. UltraMantis Black was supposed to compete, but he was out with an injury at this point. Before the match, Arik Cannon comes to the ring and takes the mic. Cannon has left the Kings of Wrestling and is without a partner. He calls out Mark Wolf and asks him if he will team up. Wolf says he has no gear. Wolf isn't able to help.

Hallowicked's partner is picked at random by Chikarason. Chikarason selects the Rockin' Rebel to a chorus of boos. Referee Bryce Remsburg informs the crowd Rebel isn't there. So Chikarason says it is Roderick Strong. He also isn't in attendance. Next name is Delirious. Delirious is here! Thus, Incoherence is now born. On commentary for this match are Mr. Zero and Lightning Mike Quackenbush.

Delirious and Rorschach start out with a test of strength. Delirious counters with a wristlock. Rorschach counters himself into one of his own. He turns it into a hammerlock. Delirious gets a side headlock takedown, and spins around on the mat. The two meet with a shoulderblock. Neither man budges. They trade kicks to the gut. Delirious takes over with a reverse elbow and an armdrag. Delirious follows it up by throwing Rorschach into the corner and headbutting him. They go to the opposite corner and Delirious chops Rorschach. They go back to the first corner, where Delirious gives Rorschach thirty one clotheslines in the corner. Hallowicked and Crossbones tag in. Hallowicked starts with a right. They reverse a couple moves. Hallowicked comes off the top with an armdrag. He repeats that move. Crossbones ducks a clothesline and connects with a kick for two. Bones follows it with a snap suplex and chokes on the mat for two. Rorschach tags back in and chokes Hallowicked with his boot in the
corner. Rorschach applies a double arm clutch and tags Crossbones back in.  Crossbones gets a snapmare and kick to the back for two. He kicks him in the back again and chokes Hallowicked on the mat. Crossbones and Rorschach then double team Hallowicked for two. Rorschach tags back in and gets a double axe handle off the middle rope. He follows with a side Russian legsweep and ground octopus stretch. Hallowicked fights off his two opponents and dives to the outside onto Crossbones. That is a legal tag and Delirious comes in. He chops away on Rorschach and hits a flying clothesline. Rorschach gets out of a powerbomb attempt and nails Delirious with a DVD. Hallowicked comes in when Delirious goes to the floor. Hallowicked blocks a DVD and teams with Delirious for a Doomsday Device.
Hallowicked rolls through to pin Rorschach with a bridge and they pick up the victory.

Your winners, MIYAWAKI & Yoshiaki Yago!

Post match, Team K-Dojo poses with the IWA-MS tag belts to add insult to injury. We also get a replay of the exciting action. That slap was disgustingly stiff. Mike Quackenbush and Mr. Zero were really getting into this, and who can blame them. The crowd was also up for it. A slow motion replay shows how devastating a Yago Heart Punch sounds.

Kingston hits a Yakuza Kick on Joker in the corner, and suplexes him out for two, but Necro comes in and breaks the pin up. Necro

The annoying mark in the crowd gets a Tag World Grand Prix chant going briefly. Kingston thanks the crowd for supporting CHIKARA.

Overall, this show on its own is worthy of a buy. It is only one of three nights, though. The two K-Dojo matches are must see, as I said before, especially the first match. And how can you turn down the chance to Necro Butcher as CP Munk? If you've never seen CHIKARA before, this is as good a primer as any. The commentary is especially top notch. Quackenbush is excellent on the play by play. The replays are a nice touch as well. Hats off the K-Dojo, the MVPs of Night One (BTW, they will be appearing with Kudo as a trio in the upcoming tournament). They made an average card with good action into a top flight card that doesn't come around very often in the United States. Night One of TWGP06 is a winner. Other thoughts: Mike Quackenbush on commentary makes a recapper's job so much easier since he actually calls all the moves. He also gives a ton of interesting info on the background of competitors. Great analysis during the matches...Throughout the show, you can hear the same voice in the crowd spitting out "one liners". You can hear him on a lot of CHIKARA DVDs, actually. It gets annoying after awhile and by the end of the DVD you'll be dying for him to shut up. No disrespect to Quack, but if Mantis were on commentary at the end, he might have put the fan in his place...The Iron Saints v. K-Dojo match was amazing. The Thomasellis really stepped up and hung with the Japanese stars...Quack & Mr. Zero did a tremendous job in the BLK OUT v. IWA-MS match, putting over constantly how Kingston was hesitant to really hurt Mickie...Standing ovations are somewhat rare in CHIKARA, as
the crowd is respectful and like a Japanese crowd, one that intently watches the match. That should tell you how thrilling the DDT vs. K-Dojo match was.
