DVD REVIEW: CHIKARA TAG WORLD GRAN PRIX NIGHT TWO

By Ed Shirreffs on 2/15/2007 3:28 PM

Night 2 of CHIKARA's Tag World Grand Prix 2006.

After looking at night one of CHIKARA's 2006 Tag World Grand Prix, it's time for a look at the second night, held on February 25 in Reading, Pennsylvania. The talent for this card was just as diverse as the first night. Featured are 16 more teams from all over. You have homegrown stars like The Colony and Team F.I.S.T., foreign attractions like Team Toryumon, oddball teams like Triple Dragon, one of whose members is a giant dragon, and teams from other independent federations, including SHIMMER, and FIP. Once again, the cover for the DVD is a comic book take off, a very cool picture of Shane Storm holding his fallen partner, Mr. Zero, as wrestlers look on in the background.

Arik Cannon kicks off a DVD reminding us that he, last year's winner with Claudio Castagnoli, can not find a partner for the tournament. Like night one, there is an Opening Ceremony featuring all of the teams competing that night. Larry Sweeney has several funny comments on commentary.

Arik Cannon calls out Andy Sumner from the back. Arik asks him to wrestle, but Sumner only replies with 'no'. Larry Sweeney and Eddie Kingston are the first commentary team.

The Colony (Fire Ant & Soldier Ant) vs. Lancelot (Lance Steel & Lance Steel)

Before the match, the younger Lance Steel talks to his buddy Dragon Dragon in the back. The older Lance Steel takes exception, since he hates Dragons. Love the Dragon Dragon.

The Lance Steels are differentiated by different shin guards. Eddie Kingston leaves and is replaced by the great UltraMantis Black on commentary. Soldier Ant gets a waistlock on Steel. They trade reversals. Soldier Ant gets up and salutes Steel. Steel takes him down, but Soldier
Ant climbs up and gets a Sunset Flip for two. Soldier Ant crawls across the ropes and tags in Fire Ant. Steel tags in as well. Steel flips and flops on the mat into a wristlock. Fire Ant reverses into a hammerlock, headlock, then an Octopus Stretch, followed by a head scissors takedown. He goes to chop Steel in the chest, but Steel's chest plate blocks it. Steels armor blocks the dropkick as well. Steel hits a tilt a whirl backbreaker. All four men get in the ring, and Lancelot team up to joust Soldier Ant. Fire Ant prevents it with a blockbuster out of the corner for two. Fire Ant gets a suplex on Steel for two. Fire Ant gets a chinlock on the mat. Steel tries to elbow out but is thrown down. Soldier Ant comes in and suplexes Steel for two. Soldier Ant applies a butter knife on the mat. Steel again tries to elbow out, but is thrown down for two. Fire Ant comes in and the ants swarm around Steel with elbow drops for two. Soldier Ant gets two with
a roll up. Soldier Ant tags Fire Ant in and they kick Steel in the corner. A Frog Splash from Soldier Ant gets two. The Ants climb to the top rope, but Steel picks both of them up on his shoulders, and somersaults forward. Steel makes the hot tag and Steel comes in to clean house. Steel spinebusters Soldier Ant and goes right into the Boston Crab. Fire Ant bulldogs him to break it up and hits the Fireman's Carry. Soldier Ant hits a diving chop off the top for two. The Ants then swing Lancelot around. Everyone is dizzy. Lancelot reverse the Ants into stereo Boston Crabs for the win.

Your winners, Lance Steel & Lance Steel!

The North Star Express (Darin Corbin & Ryan Cruz) w/ JJ Dillon vs. Notorious, Inc. (Drew Blood & Devon Moore)

Dillon puts over the NSE in a promo taped backstage, telling them to be cautious, but not too cautious. UltraMantis' mic is broken, but you can hear him call Dillon one of the most devious minds ever in the business.

Notorious, Inc jump the NSE, but they counter with stereo armdrags. Blood gets a double gutbuster, and is then sandwiched with dropkicks to the head from Corbin and Cruz. Cruz and Moore lock up. Moore gets a wristlock, but Cruz reverses and works the arm. Moore reverses himself, but Cruz goes into a headlock. Cruz hits a shoulderblock, and then a headscissors takedown. Cruz with a hip toss. Corbin tags in, and they continue the assault on the arm. Mantis calls Corbin a young Bobby Backlund. Blood kicks Corbin in the back when he hits the ropes and Moore hits a step up enziguri. Blood with a high knee, and vertical suplex. Blood gets a knee drop for two. Moore tags in and they double team Corbin, crunching him in the corner. A suplex by Moore gets two when Cruz breaks it up. Blood tags back in and keeps Corbin
from fighting back. Blood stops Corbin's charge with an eye poke.  Notorious charge him in the corner. A slingshot body press by Moore gets two. Moore scoop slams Corbin and climbs to the top rope. He misses an elbow drop, but Corbin can't make the tag. Blood comes in and pounds Corbin in the corner. Darin fights out and Cruz comes in. Clotheslines for all.  Cruz hits a wheel kick on Moore. Cruz with a lungblower, followed by Corbin flying into Moore. Drew Blood tosses Corbin, and Moore ties up Cruz. Blood wraps something around his knuckles but Dillon prevents him from hitting Cruz. Cruz hits a pumphandle driver on Moore, and the NSE team up to pin him with Cruz Control.

Your winners, The North Star Express!

Arik Cannon is back in the ring, and this time he calls out Niles Young.  Obviously, Young turns him down. That makes five people to do that so far.

Team F.I.S.T. (Icarus & Gran Akuma) vs. Team SHIMMER (Rain & Daizee Haze)

Rivals Haze and Rain are putting aside their differences for this match.  Akuma and Haze start, and there is a brief "Daizee's gonna kill you" chant. The two do the typical reversals. Akuma plays with Haze a bit. Haze gets a headlock, but Akuma gets out and continues to toy with her. Haze turns it into a satellite headscissors takedown, and a DDT. Haze dropkicks him out of the ring. Lucha tag rules mean Icarus is the legal man. Rain also tags in. The fans boo Icarus, and on commentary, Sweeney tells them to shut up. Icarus gets on his knees and puts his hands behind his back. Rain slaps him. Rain with a crossbody off the middle rope, and the two exchange forearms. Rain sends Icarus out with a lungblower and gloats, but Akuma sneaks in and gives her a shinbuster followed by a nasty kick to her ear.  Akuma with a snap suplex. He ties her in the ropes and kicks her in the chest. Icarus tags in hits Rain in the arm. Icarus gets two with a
Fisherman's Suplex. He pounds Rain in the corner, but she blocks some charges. Icarus is able to hit her in the mouth with a dropkick for two. He then chokes her on the ropes as Akuma taunts her. Haze breaks it up. Akuma chokes her in the corner with his boot. A snapmare and kick to the back gets two. Akuma gives her a chinlock. Akuma blocks a headscissors attempt and ties Rain up, tagging in Icarus. Icarus with an elbow drop. He goes for a Pedigree, but opts for a Sunset Flip. Rain rolls through and tags in Haze. She is able to take down Akuma briefly. He catches her rana attempt and powerbombs her for two. Rain breaks the pin up and gives Icarus a Tornado DDT. Icarus eventually gets the upper hand with a back breaker. He goes for a Pedigree, but moves when Haze tries to dropkick him. Icarus with a Pedigree, and then a legscissors submission to make Rain tap. Decent match, but Rain does not hit the ropes hard at all here.

Your winners, Gran Akuma & Icarus!

Arik Cannon is out yet again, calling out Jervis Cottonbelly, who according to UltraMantis, is no DJ Skittlez. Cannon says he has let himself go. The fans get a few lines in before Cannon says he doesn't want to wast any more of their time.

Men At Work (Shane Storm & Mr. Zero) vs. 2.0 (Jagged & Shane Matthews)

The Sandlot and Mighty Ducks references by Jagged in his pre match promo amuses me to no end. It is so weird to see wrestlers who grew up on the same movies that I did. Makes me feel old.

Matthews and Storm shake hands, then lock up. Storm shoulderblocks him.  Matthews tries to say Storm pulled his hair. Storm gets another shoulderblock. Storm hits some hiptosses on 2.0. Men at Work team for a double drop toe fold on Matthews. Zero puts him in the Camel Clutch and starts reading his newspaper. Jagged comes in and tears it up, doing a Ric Flair type spot where he gives it an elbow drop. Storm low bridges Jagged. Zero puts Matthews on his back, and Jagged gives Zero a rolling neckbreaker. Matthews with a big dropkick. Jagged tags in and kicks Zero. He hits a reverse elbow. Jagged works the leg. Zero is thrown into Matthews' boot.
Matthews gets a backbreaker on Zero, and Jagged knees him in the face. A side russian legsweep gets two. Jagged tags in and comes off the first rope with a fist, since the roof in Reading is very low. "Safety first." Snap suplex by Jagged gets two. Swinging neckbreaker by Jagged and he tags in Matthews. 2.0 team for a double STO. Zero fights them off and runs out of the ring to make Shane Storm the legal man. Mantis points out that 2.0 aren't aware of the rules. Storm cleans house. Jagged comes back with a dropkick to Storm. Some chicanery with Storm's Stop sign occurs. Zero finishes the match with an inverted side slam to Matthews. Not bad. You either love 2.0's smarky running commentary of their own matches or you hate
it.

Your winners, Mr. Zero & Shane Storm!

Triple Dragon (Retail Dragon & Dragon Dragon) vs. Team Toryumon (Shinjitsu Nohashi & Amigo Suzuki)

Bryce Remsburg and Eddie Kingston take over on commentary. I heart Dragon Dragon. One of the best gimmicks ever. Retail Dragon and Suzuki show off with some flippy floppy stuff. Suzuki fakes a handshake and kicks Retail Dragon. A snapmare and dragon kick insult Retail Dragon. Retail is thrown into Nohashi's boot. Nohashi with a strike to the throat. He hits some more strikes in the corner. Nohashi attacks Retail's chest. An NBA Jam reference on commentary makes me feel even older. Suzuki teases Dragon Dragon, and takes Retail down to the mat. Nohashi comes back in and teams with Suzuki to pound Retail in the corner. They follow with a Natural Disaster. Retail hurts his knee when he reverses a backbreaker into a neckbreaker. Dragon Dragon tags in and whips Suzuki with his tail. It then gives Nohashi a Dragon Screw. Suzuki gets Dragon Kicks and a Dragon Sleeper from Dragon Dragon. It goes for a Dragon Suplex, but Nohashi blocks it. Nohashi grabs Dragon Dragon for an Old School. He then dropkicks Retail out of the ring. Nohashi wipes Retail out with a suicide dive. Dragon and
Suzuki brawl in the corner. Suzuki ties Dragon Dragon in the ropes. Retail gets a double drop toe hold, then headbutts from Team Toryumon. They then hit stereo top rope headbutts to retail. A crucifix bomb by Nohashi finishes off Triple Dragon.

Your winners, Team Toryumon!

Prescription Thugs (Darkness Crabtree & Dr. Cheung) vs. Milano Collection AT & Skayde

The Prescription Thugs incorporated elements of John Cena into their act.  Crabtree's gimmick is an old man who moves slowly in the ring. Crabtree demands that Milano's "dog" be removed from the ring. Milano starts with Crabtree. Milano with a wristlock. Crabtree tries to reverse, but can't get up from the mat. Crabtree makes the ropes. Crabtree with a single leg takedown, but Milano pops back up. Crabtree tries to bend over for a back body drop, but Milano trips him. Skayde and Dr. Cheung tag in. Skayde with an armdrag to send Cheung out. Crabtree comes back in. Crabtree pauses to take his pills. Skayde steals them and it turns out they are downers for Skayde. Crabtree speeds up after his pills and starts hitting fast lucha moves. Milano gives him a step up enziguri. Cheung comes in and hits the FU. He pumps up his boots and nails Milano with a 5 Knuckle Shuffle. Cheung pounds and chokes Milano in the corner. The Prescription Thugs try to whip Milano and Skayde into each other, but it is reversed. Milano gets in the AT Lock, and Skayde gets a leg submission, forcing the Thugs to
submit. Short, hilarious match.

Your winners, Milano Collection AT & Skayde!

He sits on the top long enough for Jigsaw to catch him with the Leap of Faith. An enziguri and cover is broken up by Steen. Steen with another stiff chop to Jigsaw. He ducks an Enziguri and puts Jigsaw in a Steen Crossface. Cannon breaks it up, and all four wrestlers are down. Cannon floats over a package suplex attempt by Steen, but can't hit the Glimmering Warlock. Eddy low blows Cannon, but misses a shooting star senton attempt. Jigsaw goes for
the Jig n' Tonic on Eddy, but Steen catches him with a superkick. Eddy pins Jigsaw, but Cannon breaks it up. Cannon nails Steen with the Glimmering Warlock. Steen rolls out of the ring. Steen kicks Eddy in the side of the head, and Jigsaw delivers a top rope leg drop to finish the match. Best match of the night so far. Great tag action, and the end packed in a lot of
wrestling.

Your winners, Jigsaw & Arik Cannon!

Post match, there is a dance off between all four men in the ring. Remsburg even joins in. Eddie Kingston gets down from the commentary table and shows the white boys how to dance. A little line dancing occurs. Think the Rockettes.

The Heartbreak Express (Superstar Sean & Fabulous Phil) vs. Osamu Nishimura
& Katsushi Takemura

There is a really heated scene with Zero lying on the floor after the match, with someone asking for an ambulance to be called. Zero gets back up, but to date, that was his last match in CHIKARA. It was a really good tag match, and Quack was tremendous with his solo commentary.

CHIKARA saved the best for last. Really quick wrestlers going all out. There were a ton of cool reversals here, and some interesting double team moves.

Overall, I would recommend this DVD. It's not as good as Night One, but is actually a more accurate representation of what CHIKARA is usually like. The first round was really heavy on the gimmicks, and only one match (Steen/Eddy vs. Cannon/Jigsaw) stood out. Aside from the first one, all the second round matches are worth checking out. First round had more laughs
for those who love the gimmicks, the second round brought the wrestling. As usual, Quackenbush does an excellent job on play by play, also giving some color commentary since he was flying solo. If you are a fan of Japanese wrestlers, definitely pick this up for the rare Stateside appearances. This was Osamu Nishimura & Katsushi Takemura's first match after leaving New Japan in early 06, according to Quack.
