DVD REVIEW: RING OF HONOR - HONOR NATION

By Ed Shirreffs on 2/11/2008 12:31 AM

On October 5, 2007, Ring of Honor held 'Honor Nation' in Boston, Massachusetts. This show took place the night before a PPV taping, and the last show I reviewed under similar circumstances (Motor City Madness), I found it to be...lacking. Just looking at the back cover, I can see this looks like a stronger lineup.

The DVD opens with a Delirious promo.

Match thoughts:

The opening tag was your standard match, but really picked up at the end. I'll be completely honest and just say I flat out don't care for anything Adam Pearce is involved in. The Cross/Stevens team is much more intriguing.

Delirious-BJ Whitmer did a good job of continuing the one on one feud they have going.

I thought that they were thisclose to putting something really special together in the three way bout. It really could have gone ten more minutes. Something was missing with Nigel. I'm not going to accuse him of taking it a little easy since he had the biggest match of his career scheduled for the next evening, but he seemed like he was a step or two behind at times and was just waiting to hit some lariats. Still, it was very entertaining.

A few things bug me about how Hero matches come off on DVD. The stalling at the start takes a little too long. I'm sure it's great live since you can get involved, but it doesn't translate on DVD, especially when it's done show after show. I also get annoyed at announcers trying too hard to be indignant on commentary when discussing Hero's antics. The match itself was fine when it got going, but the flash finish wasn't well done. There could have been more suspense and some true near falls to get the crowd into it, but I suppose they were saving the big moves like the Hero's Welcome of Alpamare Waterslide for future matches, which makes sense.

The anything goes brawl was a lot of fun. Necro brings something different to ROH and they can do a lot with him.

The squash is what it is.

Aries-Danielson was one of those matches where every single move means something. Great selling, great psychology, great execution. Match of the night. These two are always able to deliver. Even if you've seen them wrestle many times before, you won't be disappointed.

The tag team scramble was a lot of fun and did a great job of establishing the Vulture Squad as a force to be reckoned with. Everyone meshed well together, and the action was fast and furious. Lots of fun here. I hope the ROH commentators get the names of Ruckus and Jigsaw's moves down on future releases.

Main event was very solid. The outcome was never in doubt, but Steen stepped up big time to make it look like he really had a shot at winning. An entertaining main event. My biggest complaint is that Morishima barely sold the knee when he was walking around on offense.

Overall, this was a good show, a much better Pre-PPV effort than last time. They got a good mix of undercard matches, and Morishima went all out in the main event. I would love to see a major upset on one of these shows one time, just to make the ROH Title matches less predictable, but that's a relatively minor complaint. If you are a fan of Aries and Danielson (who isn't?), makes sure this is in your collection. It's worthy as a stand alone purchase, and you'll be getting great value if you are able to pick this one up in a sale. Some of the early matches were average, and the squash should have been first or second, but the last three matches offer a lot of great action.
